These were the first 2 Bay Area Caddy Gatherings.
Reports from events past:
After a lot of work, Lewis pulled of a good first Caddy Gathering last Saturday. We had 5 rigs and owners in attendance:
Owner | Year | Engine |
Lewis Grimes | 1982 | 1.6l n/a |
Roger Brown | 1982 | 1.9l n/a |
Ronald Palmer | 1982 | 1.9l turbo |
Darrell Benner | 1982 | gas |
Rodney Noriel | 1980 | 2.0 GTi |
I was running a bit late and arrived about 20 minutes after 10 to find Lewis waiting at the pizza place. Turns out they don't actually open until 11:00, so we passed the time talking about our trucks. Shortly, Darrell pulls in, followed by Rodney and finally Ron.
Here's Lewis's '82.
A shot of my '82 (taken earlier)
Ron's nice looking '82LX with a 1.9TD engine
Darrell's really clean '82 gasser
Rodney's nicely done 2.0L gas pickup
After checking out each other's rigs for a few hours, it was time for some pizza. Round Table served up a couple of their finest and afterwards, Lewis conducted a raffle, lots of handy tools and other gadgets for the aspiring Caddy mechanic were raffled off. I think everyone got something useful. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon talking cars and trucks and engines. A buddy of Lewis' came by after his Econoline van club meeting and the talk shifted from European to domestic rigs. Anyway, we all said our farewells and vowed to continue the meets in the future.

I was running a bit late and arrived about 10:10 to find Lewis waiting at the pizza place. At 10:30. the two of us headed north and east, ending up in a very crowded shopping mall parking lot in Dublin. We found Darrell waiting in front of Sears and then we went off in search of parking. About noon, Ron arrived in his Comet, as his Caddy was temporarily out of commission. Ron climed into Lewis' Caddy and we all headed off to Fairfield, home of the Jelly Belly factory.
It was a gorgeous day, warm and sunny, no wind or fog. We went in and had some lunch at the cafeteria. The jelly bean shaped pizzas were apparently quite good. We had expected some other folks to show up, but by 2PM, we jumped in line for the factory tour. There is quite a story behind the jelly bean and other candy making activities. Lots of cool looking machinery. Ron spotted a fork lift that his company makes, so was going to try to find out who services it. The video showing how the christmas tree taffy was made was quite fascinating. The shipping are with the array of pallet loading robots was quite interesting.
After the tour, we hit the factory store and loaded up on Belly Flops. Luckily, Caddys can carry a lot of payload, so all the jelly beans were easily transported back home. Darrell had a nice rear sway bar he had taken off his truck (he had a nice new one to replace it) and I decided that that would be a nice addition for my truck.
