Here is some miscellaneous information I've gathered about my '81 VW diesel:

Here's the factory instrument cluster. On the left is the speedometer/odometer w/ trip meter (both working once again). On the right is the electric clock that keeps perfect time, I might add, along with the water temperature gauge at the top (mine runs 2 marks past the first heavy mark normally, the radiator fan kicks on about 2-3 marks before the red zone. In the center, from the upper left across and down are:
Emergency brake | . | . | . | Seat belt reminder |
Charge/Alternator | Turn Signal | High Beam | Oil Pressure | Empty |
Empty | Empty | Empty | Glow Plugs | Empty |
Of course, I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I replaced that sorry looking instrument cluster with one of of an '84 GTi:
I love the 120 MPH speedo (even though I can barely top 80) and the tach is very nice (and it works, too!). The glow plug LED works, the upshift light works, the "Check Emissions" light and mechanism thankfully don't work!

Apparently the diagram below was not included in the Bentley diesel shop manuals. I found that this panel layout matched that in my '82 pickup, so placed a copy here for my future reference:

The Caddy tailgate has raised letters spelling out VOLKSWAGEN that are topped with applied lettering, usually black or white. If the tailgate is painted or repaired, its usually necessary to remove the old lettering. The letters are no longer available from Volkswagen. So below are two options:
These scans are linked to full size images to print on 8.5x11 sheets to make up the tailgate letters:
Or this site used to have pre-made letters, before VWOA took them down:
There was a new source for the letters in the UK, also seems to have vanished: http://www.volkswagenstickers.co.uk/
